I’ve been doing my research on reel mowers and have not found any information about using the mowers on wet grass. Are there any reel mowers on the market that won’t rust, or are they all prone to rust?
I’ve used my Scotts Classic reel mower on wet and damp grass without issue, and I haven’t had any issues with rust.
You can always spray off the blades with a silicone spray lubricant after you mow when it is wet, if you are concerned.
The mower is most likely to rust only when it is stored outside in the rain, and not typically from using it on damp grass.
Question, we have a very old Craftsman push reel mower, we still use it to mow the lawn, years ago Sears wanted it for their museum and we turned them down. Now we are desprate to find out how old it is, it’s got a wooden handle, perfect craftsman model number/stamp and it use to be red. The origional wheels and everything is working great and looking fine, please let us know asap.
@Mike,

I recommend contacting this site. He should know about your mower.
Can I use a feeler gage to align the blade to the cutting surface? If so, what gage thickness should I aim for?
@Aaron,
A gauge is used on mowers that are designed to not make contact with the cutting bar. An example of this is the Brill Razorcut 38. The distance should be the thickness of a piece of paper, and that is what we suggest you use.
I have an old Great state model 400 push reel mower with a self adjusting ball bearing, it has a good amount of rust on it and I plan to clean it and paint it its original colors. anyway I was wondering about how old it is and if it is worth anything how much. Thanks,
-Phil

Where can I buy replacement parts for a Silent Scotts Mower, 20″ wide Model 5M9. I particularly need a new roller. I live in RI.
@Zane Anderson, Try http://www.reelin.com they’re the manufactures and your best bet for parts.
I purchased an used, older model of Great States reel mower for my grandson to use on his small yard and he is telling me he can only get it to cut when taking it backwards. What is he doing wrong?
Thanks.
@Louise Jenkins, Is the handle on correct? Maybe forward is backwards and backwards is forward!
I inherited a Great States Feather mower that needs sharpening. While I can pop the hubcap off as the first step, I can’t figure out how to remove the wheel. Any thoughts? There doesn’t seem to be the same kind of E or C ring holding the wheel to the axle as described in the sharpening kit that I have.
@Peggy, Buy a sharpening kit that does not require you to take off the wheels and rub stuff on the reel, this one should do.
You can cut it down to fit just about any size. http://www.cleanairgardening.com/prison-reel-sharpener.html
If your mower is 18 inches, get the version for the Scotts and cut it down to 18 inches. A hack saw will cut this down in seconds.
I have a Brill Luxus 38 reel mower without a bag attachment. Will the grass catchers that are currently being sold as “fits all Brill mowers” fit my older model? I would like to use the mower with the grass catcher.
Thanks.
@Irene, Yes, the Razorcut 38 grass catcher will fit the Luxus 38. Just don’t get the Razor 33 grass catcher, it will not fit.
I am looking for a replacement bag for an old Scott’s reel mower. Any suggestions? I have checked e-bay but they only had one listed and it appeared to be for a newer model seeing as how it included mounting brackets.
Why not use the current version, will it not work? I believe it’s universal and should work. Call this number to see: 800-633-1501
